Vital Radio 119 – Hour 1: David Akermanis

| November 23rd, 2010 | No Comments »

I had a ton of fun putting this mix together for Vital Radio about two weeks ago.

I’ve been on a big time house binge lately and gearing up for my Speedboats and Big Explosions project with DJ Endgame. The two of us played our first official gig as a duo at the People Downtown Halloween jam here in Toronto a couple of weeks ago and the place was electric. In terms of bringing our two styles together in to one neat little package, we’re pretty much already there.

This mix is a pretty good representation of, at least a portion, of the Speedboats style. Often techy, and even more frequently kitschy and disco-influenced. From there to progressive and pop and back again.

Vital Radio 117 – Hour 2: Sander Van Doorn

| November 23rd, 2010 | No Comments »

First there were Heineken and Edam, then came Sander van Doorn. The Dutch musical genius may not be as mature as his predecessors but he’s certainly made as much of an impact in his comparatively short career, not only in The Netherlands but also across the world.

Having made his debut in the world renowned DJ Mag Top 100 at 32 in 2006, before climbing 19 places to No.13 in 2008’s poll; sandwiched between Carl Cox and Paul Oakenfold, the fast rise of Sander van Doorn is a testament to his raw talent and dedication. In just seven years he’s clocked up more dance floor destroyers, sell out gigs and awards than most artists do in a lifetime… and his journey is still in its infancy.

It was Sander’s DJing experiences around the world that prompted him to start up ‘Dusk Till Doorn’, taking clubbing to the next level, offering the ultimate Sander van Doorn experience.. Having already wowed crowds at the launch in May at The Gallery, Ministry of Sound, London and in Ibiza in June, Sander’s musical and visual journey continues to pleasure crowds around the globe.

Friday Flashback: ATB – Movin’ Melodies

| October 15th, 2010 | No Comments »

He’s been a dance music icon since his first album “Movin’ Melodies” hit in 1999.  Even if you’re laughing at this post now, in the trendy year of 2010, I guarantee that when you hear the 10 iconic notes of the melody in 9PM (Till I Come) [lol - you just counted on your fingers!] you know who the producer is. We’re talking, of course, about the legendary ATB.

“Dance”, André Tanneberger’s first single as Sequential One, was finally released in February 1993 and this was followed by other, Techno-oriented releases. André was slowly setting up his own little studio.

André, however, did not make his real breakthrough until “9 PM (Till I Come)”, which was released under the name ATB on Kontor Records. This explosive mix of lively dance beats and the unique, characteristic ATB guitar became a massive hit throughout the world. André also entered all important international charts with his follow-up singles “Don’t Stop” and “Killer”, a cover of the Adamski classic, and the success of the three hits inspired him to record his first album “Movin’ Melodies”. André, however, has had a great deal of success not only as a producer but also as a remixer, making tracks by artists such as Moby, William Orbit and A-HA fit for the dance floor..

Here are a few of my favourite ATB tracks from the past 10 years.
