Tuesday Tunes: Latenta Project

| April 27th, 2010 | 1 Comment »

Where does a passion come from? How does it get to the point where once you find it, its all you want to do? Well in Macedonia at a tender young age of 11, Dimce found his passion when he was skipping classes to seek out music at his local record store. What he found that he liked best, was house music. At about the same time Miki, being the creative person he is, found his passion creating music while playing around with production software on his home computer in the early ‘90’s.

Miki (Inox) Stefanoski and Dimce (Dido) Filiposki met 7 years ago, over a chat service talking about the music they both love. Now living in the same city a short distance from each other, many nights are spent in their home studio sharing ideas, creating tracks and mixes to be shared with anyone willing to listen.

Latenta Project tracks have been played and supported by Laurent Garnier, Luke Fair, Desyn Masiello, Demi, Ricky Ryan, 16Bit Lolitas, Leigh Morgan, Nacho Marco, Spiritchaser, Eelke Klein, Satoshi Fumi, Ross Couch, James Talk, Kosmas Epsilon, Manuel Tur, Dana Bergquist, Harry Peat, Steve Mill, Spin Science, Sebastian Davidson, Scope, Add2Basket, Tom Morgan, Mike Haddad just to name a few…

What was a dream of producing proper house music is now a reality. Their first track ‘Good Morning’ woke everyone up including Ricky Ryan who used it for his mixed compilation on Proton Radio two years ago. Since then their tracks have been signed to numerous labels including Plastic City, Proton Music, Sick Watona, Ready Mix, Deepology, Witty Tunes, Outside The Box Music, Cabrio Records, Body Rhythm Black etc. Playing all over the Balkans from and even Dubai they are proving that a true passion can take you places. They both understand what it takes to move a crowd whether they are warming up for someone like Luke Fair or head-lining a full night set. “Its easy to select 20 peak-time bombs and play a 2 hour set but in a 5 or 6 hour set you really need to program the timing. Time and time again they have proved that their passion keeps the crowd not only attracted to the sounds bellowing out of the speakers but glued to the dance floor!

Another great set. If you enjoyed last Tuesday’s Milton Jackson set then you’ll like this even more!

Tuesday Tunes: Milton Jackson

| April 20th, 2010 | 1 Comment »

Milton Jackson (aka Barry Christie) Released his first EP aged 19 on Solemusic’s Tronicsole imprint. Known for his dark, almost techno influenced deep house music. Milton Jackson tends to fuse straight driving beats with eclectic, techy production styles. His first and so far only long player, ‘The Bionic Boy’ was received well by critics and the house fraternity and it spawned the Pepe Bradock influenced ‘Sunlight’.

After having mainly appeared on Glasgow labels such as Solemusic and Glasgow Underground, 2006 sees Milton spread his wings with EPs due out on Freerange, Silver Network, Urbantorque and Luke Sardello’s Icon Recordings. He has also recorded under a variety of pseudonyms, even venturing into the down-tempo domain as Napoleon Solo. His Bear Trax imprint released Mylo’s first vinyl release when the pair recorded as ‘The Pretty Boys’.

Enjoy this delightfully laid back, but deep/dark mix! I know I did.

Some of the best progressive house labels are young

| April 19th, 2010 | 1 Comment »

One of the best things about the state of the music industry in 2010 is that almost anyone, with a little time and energy, can deliver great music to the masses. Sure, the old guard still produce a lot of quality Progressive House music – but in my mind, some of the best and most innovative electronic music out there is coming from young artists and labels alike. Here are a few young Progressive House labels that are already becoming a force to be reckoned with:

Nellie Recordings

As a forward thinking newcomer, Nellie Recordings has swiftly been acclaimed as one of those labels that stand the test of time. With support from some of the strongest names in the scene, and an ever growing network – Nellie distinguishes itself by having a brilliant connection with the signed artists and a never-ending dialogue towards the rest of the world.

Starting off as a small label with an alignment towards a broad variety of trance music, more focus was given to the world of progressive house. With new management Nellie quickly showed off its strength by skillful A&R and thereby signing artists that really did a stir within the scene.

Nellie is boasting itself as the label where classic structures of progressive house and trance meet up to create surprising, yet eye-opening results. The traditional values and considerations around electronic music are taken out for a spin before being released on Nellie – hence the ambition to highlight a catalogue of releases that can’t be compared to anything else.

Always striving towards publishing the most authentic of cuts, the goal is to be home for future classics and present bombs that shine with quality and fullness throughout the whole spectrum of sounds, from the deepest bottom to the most sparkling highs. That’s what Nellie Recordings is all about.

Silk Digital Records

Silk Digital Records began as the vision of four great friends from Moscow: Max Flyantikov (A&R), Michael Alexeev (art design), Anton Vorobiev (IT/finance), and Alex Golovanov (a.k.a Mango, music consultant). Mango’s ability as both a producer and scout for up-and-coming talent in the global progressive scene was instrumental in developing the label’s sound: a distinctive brand of melodic progressive with emotional undertones.

With further support from the Python project (owners of Carica records), Alucard, Dynamic Illusion, Arthur Deep, Embliss, Lokitas, Kintar, Retroid, and Stefan Anion, Silk Digital Records was launched in January 2008.

Two years later, parent label Silk Digital Records is now just one of four distinct electronic music divisions under the umbrella of “Silk Music Publishing”: Silk Digital records, Silk Royal records, Silk Sofa music, & Silk Textures

Key Recordings

The latest newcomer to the world of progressive house, Key is run by U.S. and Canadian born teenagers Luke Shipstad & Nick Stoynoff.

Still in it’s infancy, after having put out their first two EPs, Key will more than likely be home to many of progressive house’s young stars. With tracks already being supported by Jaytech, and their third release just around the corner you can expect some great stuff from this young fledgling label.

Tuesday Tunes: Milk n’ Sugar

| April 13th, 2010 | No Comments »

Several synonyms spring to mind when trying to describe the role Milk & Sugar have had on house music in Germany. The words, pioneers, leaders, forerunners, or pathfinders all match, but somehow does not quite captivate the core of their impact. These guys belong to the first ambassadors of this genre and were wearily smiled upon by sceptics in the mid 90s whilst trying to break into the industry. However, Michael “Milk” Kronenberger and Steffen “Sugar” Harning directly hit the nail on the head with their intuitive feel for trends and futuristic sound.

In actual fact, in the beginning, everything seemed to be working against them and almost no label was interested in their first productions. However, Michael and Steffen decided to view their rejection from several labels as a positive sign that it might be the right time to take things into their own hands and consequently started their own label. The result, Milk & Sugar Recordings, features not only personal productions from the Munich duo, but also releases from internationally known artists such as Robbie Rivera or kiD Alex.

The founding of the label did by no means influence their studio work and Milk & Sugar could still continue to bestow upon the house-crazed club communities tunes such as ”Higher And Higher”, “Love Is In The Air” or ”Let The Sun Shine”, who are still up til today proven classics which
also did very well on the international scene. In 2007 for example, their track, “Stay Around For This”, apart from being the most successful house track in Brazil, also reached the top of the UK club charts twice within a period of 13 months.

Judging from their references, MILK & SUGAR are also well sought-after as re-mixers and have in their career path, already worked on tracks with popular artists such as Jamiroquai, Usher, Janet Jackson and Reamonn. Every weekend you can be sure to find MILK & SUGAR on the decks in the hottest clubs all around the world, stirring up the local crowds on the dance floor with their tried and tested interpretations of house music. Be it Brazil, Japan, South Africa or even Siberia – there are not very many places left on the globe where their record cases have not yet been.

Hat tip to our resident awesome photo man @Smuncky for pointing me in the direction of this great Milk & Sugar set. Their tracks are a regular staple at many a Vital event. Be sure to catch us this Saturday at Libra Lounge in Toronto for more of the same.
